October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an opportune time to spread awareness about the impact of breast cancer and the importance of early detection. For many, early detection can mean the difference between life and death, as breast cancer is most treatable when caught in its earliest stages. At North Country HealthCare, we are dedicated to providing our communities with vital screening services, including our Well Woman HealthCheck Program.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women worldwide, and in the United States, it accounts for approximately 30% of all new cancer diagnoses each year. According to the American Cancer Society, about 297,790 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in 2024, along with 55,720 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.
While breast cancer can affect women at any age, the risk increases with age. Other risk factors include family history, genetic mutations (like BRCA1 and BRCA2), lifestyle factors such as alcohol consumption, and certain reproductive histories. However, it’s important to note that most women diagnosed with breast cancer do not have any obvious risk factors. This is why regular screening and early detection are critical for all women.
The earlier breast cancer is detected, the better the chances of successful treatment. Survival rates for localized breast cancer (cancer that has not spread beyond the breast) are significantly higher, with a 5-year relative survival rate of 99%. However, when breast cancer is diagnosed after it has spread to other parts of the body, the 5-year survival rate drops to around 30%.
Regular mammograms and clinical breast exams are essential tools in detecting breast cancer early. Mammograms can detect tumors before they can be felt, often at a stage when the cancer is most treatable. For women 40 and older, the American Cancer Society recommends having a mammogram every year or two, depending on personal risk factors. Women under 40 should discuss their risk with their healthcare provider to determine when to begin screening.
Unfortunately, many women face barriers to accessing breast cancer screening, particularly in rural and underserved communities. Lack of insurance, limited access to healthcare providers, and financial constraints can prevent women from getting the care they need. This is where programs like North Country HealthCare’s Well Woman HealthCheck can make a difference.
The Well Woman HealthCheck Program (WWHP) provides age-appropriate breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services to uninsured or underinsured women. This life-saving program is available to women aged 40-64 who meet income eligibility guidelines and is funded by the Arizona Department of Health Services.
Through the WWHP, eligible women can receive:
For women who qualify, the Well Woman HealthCheck Program removes the financial burden of screening and ensures that they have access to the care they need.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, North Country HealthCare is hosting several “Pinktober” screening events throughout October. These events are part of our commitment to making sure breast cancer screenings are as accessible as possible to our communities. During these events, women who qualify for the Well Woman HealthCheck Program can receive mammograms and breast health services at no cost.
You can find the full list of Pinktober events on our website here. These events are a great opportunity to take charge of your health and get the screening that could save your life.
At North Country HealthCare, we believe no one should have to forgo life-saving screenings due to financial barriers. Our Well Woman HealthCheck Program is here to ensure that all women in our communities have access to the care they need, regardless of their ability to pay.
During Breast Cancer Awareness Month—and throughout the year—our team is dedicated to providing comprehensive breast health services. Whether you’re due for a routine mammogram or need diagnostic follow-up care, we are here to support you every step of the way.
