Measles is a highly contagious and potentially deadly disease with confirmed cases in 35 states, including Arizona. It can be dangerous, especially for babies and children. Complications include pneumonia (a lung infection), encephalitis (brain swelling), ear infections and other complications. According to the CDC, about 1 in 1,000 children with measles will develop encephalitis, which can cause permanent brain damage. It’s considered more contagious than the flu and COVID, spreading easily through coughing, sneezing, and even close conversation.
