It’s Time to Schedule Your Annual Colonoscopy!

05/23/2025 by Taylor Holston

If you’re age 45 or older, it’s time to schedule your colonoscopy. We know, it’s not really anyone’s idea of a good time, but colonoscopies are a powerful tool for preventing colorectal cancer, which is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States.

The good news is that colon cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer when caught early through screening. So while a colonoscopy might not be your favorite appointment to book, it could easily save your life. So why wait?

What is a Colonoscopy?

If you’ve never had a colonoscopy before, you might be wondering what it is. A colonoscopy is a routine screening that allows a medical provider to examine the inside of your colon and rectum. It’s done using a thin, flexible tube with a small camera on the end. The camera lets the provider look for abnormal growths like polyps, which can sometimes develop into cancer.

If the provider finds polyps during your colonoscopy screening, they can often be removed right away. The entire process only takes about 30 to 60 minutes, and you’ll be given some sedation to help you relax and stay comfortable. Most people don’t remember the procedure at all.

When Should You Get One?

Current guidelines recommend that most adults start screening at age 45. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer or other risk factors, your healthcare provider may recommend starting at a younger age or having screenings more often. It’s best to talk with your primary care provider if you’re not sure what’s right for you.

Why Colonoscopies Matter

Colorectal cancer often has no symptoms in its early stages. That means you could feel completely fine but still have early warning signs inside your colon. A colonoscopy screening is the only way to know for sure.

Here are a few really good reasons to go ahead and book that appointment:

  • Screening finds polyps early, when they’re easier to treat.
  • Early-stage colon cancer has a much higher survival rate.
  • Removing polyps during a colonoscopy can prevent cancer altogether.

Waiting until you notice symptoms of colon cancer might mean that you’re waiting until it’s too late to be able to treat it.

Common Concerns

Chances are, you’ve heard some horror stories about the bowel prep that you have to do before your colonoscopy screening. You’ll need to follow a liquid diet the day before and drink a special solution that clears out your colon. Yes, it can be inconvenient, but think about it like this: it’s one day out of your year for long-term peace of mind.

Some people also worry about cost. Many insurance plans, including Medicare and AHCCCS (Medicaid), cover routine colonoscopies as preventive care. If you’re not sure what your insurance covers, you can contact us or ask for help when you schedule your appointment.

Still feeling nervous? Don’t worry; that’s normal. But thousands of people have colonoscopies every day, and the vast majority report a smooth experience and lots of relief afterward.

What to Watch for Between Screenings

While colonoscopies are the most complete way to screen for signs of colon cancer, you should still pay attention to any changes you notice in your body. Contact your provider if you notice:

  • Blood in your stool
  • Ongoing stomach pain or cramping
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Changes in your bowel habits that last more than a few days

These symptoms don’t necessarily mean cancer, but they’re always worth checking out.

Take the First Step

If you’re due for your colonoscopy, it’s time to get it on your schedule. As you know, life gets busy, and it is easy to put these things off. But the sooner you schedule it, the sooner you can check it off your list. Not sure where to start? We are here to help!
