Every year, as the weather cools down and the kids head back to school, flu season makes its return. Influenza (commonly called “the flu”) is a contagious respiratory illness that can cause mild to severe symptoms and, in some cases, lead to serious complications. Because it spreads easily through coughs, sneezes, and even talking, you want to make sure to protect yourself and your family as much as you can.
In northern Arizona, the flu typically peaks between late fall and early spring. People of all ages can get sick, but some segments of the population tend to get hit harder, such as very young children, pregnant women, older adults, and individuals with chronic health conditions.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), millions of people get the flu each year, and many experience complications that lead to hospitalization. While the flu can be serious, especially for certain high-risk groups, the good news is that flu vaccines are a proven way to reduce your chances of getting sick and they can significantly lower the risk of severe illness and complications. At North Country HealthCare, we’re here to support your health and help you stay protected throughout flu season.
The single best way to protect yourself from the flu is to get vaccinated every year. Flu viruses change constantly, so the vaccine is updated annually to protect against the strains that are most likely to circulate. Even if you do end up getting the flu after you’ve been vaccinated, you are likely to have a milder illness and a much lower risk of complications.
Everyone six months and older should get a flu shot each year, ideally by the end of October. However, getting vaccinated later in the season can still provide protection! The flu vaccine is especially critical for people who are at higher risk.
At North Country HealthCare, flu shots are available at all of our locations. We accept AHCCCS, Medicare, most private insurance plans, and we offer a sliding fee scale for those without insurance to ensure cost isn’t a barrier. You can request an appointment at your nearest clinic and schedule a flu shot for yourself and your family.
While we know that flu shots are your best defense, healthy habits can also reduce your chances of getting or spreading the flu. Of course, washing your hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds is so important during flu season. If you can’t get to a sink, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Try to avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth. Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow and stay home if you’re feeling sick to prevent spreading the flu to others.
Keeping surfaces clean is another simple but important task during flu season. Disinfect commonly touched objects such as doorknobs, keyboards, phones, and light switches, especially if someone in your home or workplace is not feeling well. Encourage children to practice these habits too… they’re powerful tools for keeping everyone healthy!
Flu symptoms can develop quickly and often include:
Some people, especially children, may also experience vomiting or diarrhea. Because the flu shares some symptoms with COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses, it’s important to get tested if you’re unsure.
If you do get sick, stay home, rest, and drink plenty of fluids. Most people recover in a week or two, but if you’re at high risk for complications or your symptoms are severe, you should see a healthcare provider. Antiviral medications may be prescribed to shorten the duration of your symptoms and reduce the risk of complications, but these work best when started early.
North Country HealthCare can help you stay healthy during flu season and all year long. In addition to flu shots, we provide comprehensive primary care, urgent care for acute issues, and guidance on managing chronic conditions that can increase your risk for severe illness. If you’re not feeling well, our providers can help monitor your symptoms, answer your questions about flu prevention and treatment, and determine if you need an antiviral medication.
