North Country HealthCare’s Radiation Exposure Screening & Education Program (RESEP) offers free medical screenings to eligible ‘Downwinders’—individuals exposed to radiation from nuclear testing during the 1950s and early 1960s.
RESEP is a grant-funded program from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). In the 1950s and early 1960s, the United States conducted nuclear weapons testing, during a time when the dangers of radiation exposure were not fully understood. Individuals who were exposed to radiation from these tests, known as ‘Downwinders,’ are at increased risk for certain cancers and other health issues.
“Downwinders” are individuals that lived in an eligible Northern Arizona county while the nuclear testing sites were active. If you lived within the red area during the 1950s or in July of 1962, you are considered a downwinder and may be eligible for a no-cost medical screening exam.
Eligible Counties:
Medical screening exams are available at several North Country locations through RESEP.
