Eye exams help screen for complications from diabetes

Araceli Carrillo is a 31-year-old, Type 1 diabetic with no health insurance. Recently she visited North Country HealthCare for a routine eye exam to screen for retinal bleeding.

It is recommended that diabetic patients receive a thorough eye exam yearly, because diabetes can sometimes cause bleeding in the small blood vessels of the eyes, which can lead to blindness if undetected. This complication of diabetes, called retinopathy, may occur when blood sugars remain high over a long period of time. North Country HealthCare offers retinopathy screenings to diabetic patients as one of the standards of diabetic care.
